It was billed as the biggest Canadian concert of all
time, and one of the biggest in world history. And for a change, the event
lived up to the hype. The 11-hour Rolling Stones-led Downsview Park concert
for S.A.R.S. recovery started with a bang at noon Wednesday – and with
Rush, AC/DC, the Guess Who, and more on the bill, it just kept building.
By the middle of the afternoon, an estimated 400,000
plus were on the site, as the crowd continued to swell. And so did their
enthusiasm. “I am so excited that we actually got to come,” exults Halifax’s
Susan Downey. “It took so much planning ahead. We're finally here!” Ed
Brabant’s journey was only from Midland. “We didn't want to miss an event
of this size,” he explains. “My wife's a big fan of AC/DC, and we want
to support Toronto.” Mark Aquilla brought his young daughter. “I thought
it would be a great experience for her to see everything that's going
on,” he explains. “It will be something she will always remember.”
But one unnamed fan put it best amid the sea of humanity.
“It's an experience in itself,” he says. “It's not really a concert so
much as a Woodstock of sorts.”
The Stones will take to the stage for a 90-minute set
at the end of the day, following a long list of other performers including
AC/DC, Sam Roberts and Justin Timberlake. The show has been divided up
into two sessions. The first kicked off at 12pm. The second revved up
just after 5pm, when the really big names came on stage.
How did everyone hear their favourite acts in such a massive space filled
with such an enormous crowd? Nine video screens and 36 sound delay towers
were set up to make sure everyone can hear and see everything.
